Description: This item displays one of the most important Javanese batik patterns - the "tampal" or patchwork design. The design field is divided into shapes with each shape filled by an individual pattern. This pattern may have its origin in the patched clothing worn by Buddhist monks as an outward expression of poverty. The patterning is executed in different combinations of brown, white and black, and bordered along all four edges by an alternating striped pattern. It is self fringed along each edge.
