bed valance
Date: 18th century
Dimensions: 190 x 56 cm (74 13/16 x 22 1/16 in.)
Medium: silk, linen
Made in: Greece
Description: This item consists of parts of a dress which were made into a bed valance (constructed from six separate pieces) at a later date. The four central widths are taken from the border of the skirt, with the two end pieces taken from the sides of a bodice opening. The fringe was added later. The combination of colours used and hexagonal patterning suggest that the dress could have originally come from the Dodecanese - Rhodes.
