border fragment
Date: before 1914
Dimensions: 59 x 35 cm (23 1/4 x 13 3/4 in.)
Medium: silk, cotton
Made in: India
Collected in: Morocco, Fez
Description: This item is a fragment from the border of a larger item, possibly a curtain. It is embroidered with individual floral sprays set side by side vertically, with smaller floral sprays filling the gaps. Narrow borders of a floral scroll pattern frame the edges. An inner narrow border pattern is composed of small flower motifs set side by side. The embroidery is worked in chain stitch and is not reversible. This is probably professional rather than domestic embroidery. Pesel wrote that 'the proportions of borders and sprays are interesting'.
