Description: A hand woven place mat, made in Japan by the Ainu people, an ethnic group living in Hokkaido. It is woven based on the pattern and technique of traditioal Ainu cloth, though is produced commercially. This mat is in naturals, greens, yellows and reds with stripes of repeated weave designs and fringing. Part of a loan collection, collected in the late 20th century.
